The traditional missionary attitude to the South was being replaced by a greater awareness of development, and those Irish people going overseas were no longer predominantly missionaries. In this period many of the Irish development sending agencies were emerging; today there are a considerable number of agencies dealing with the traditional long term placement to very short term stints overseas.
