Top marketers reveal what it takes to succeed at a recent Alternatives marketing hub event and share some key insights on how to fast track your marketing career.
At the inaugural evening of an invite-only series of events titled Alternatives Marketing Hub, we were lucky to have 4 fantastic marketing directors share how they fast-tracked their careers. They spoke about how they got to where they are today, what hurdles they faced and what career enhancing tips they had.

Here’s what Jonnie Cahill of O2, April Redmond of Kerry Foods, and John Concannon of Fáilte Ireland and Niall O’Grady of Permanent TSB had to say (pictured from left to right)...
Their Top 10 Tips …
-
Be passionate and positive. Be passionate about marketing, about your brands, about your career. Be the sort of positive person people want to be around.
-
Be self aware. Insight into “you” is key. Know your strengths and play to them. Seek out 360 degree feedback, learn from your performance reviews.
- Choose to do what you love doing and care about what you do.
-
It’s all about the numbers. Learn to be commercial, be comfortable with numbers, look for the ROI. Today marketers have the power of numbers at their fingertips- CRM, predicative analysis-so ensure you use them. Add business value always- it’s your raison d’être.
- Execution is key. The best strategy in the world means nothing if it’s not well executed.
-
Never chase the cash…. always chase the job. It’ll be the job, not the extra €150 a month that’ll get you out of bed with a spring in your step.
- Engage people. Listen to them, ask their opinions, treat them with respect, give them the credit where it’s due. Socialise your ideas, ask people their opinions and get buy-in. Treat your agencies with respect-they’re an extension of your team and your success depends on your total team
-
Get a good coach/ mentor. Seek them out. They will champion you
- Be ambitious and tenacious. Don’t assume you’ll just get ahead. Be ambitious, available and up for the challenge. And stick with it- don’t lose your ambition- hard work and “relentless resilience” will pay.
-
Hire the best people you can find. It’s never about you, it’s about the team. Hire the person most likely to be your successor. And of course-use Alternatives!
So great, practical tips from those that made it. If you have any tips that you’d like to share we’d love to hear from you and we’ll tweet them to the Alternatives marketing community – please email them to marketinghub@alternatives.ie
